They held books together so that they could survive, thrive and lead to discussion that would bring about an understanding of difficult ideas and events in the book. I have thought many times about the significance of those rubber bands. I began to keep rubber bands handy to hold the tattered books together so that pages would not end up on the floor of someone’s bedroom or the school bus or the school hall, never to be claimed again.
